Skin care in winter is extremely important. Our skin is exposed to special stress during the dark season. It is not only the cold that hurts it, but also the pleasantly warm but very dry heating air, which is particularly damaging to the delicate skin of the face: Feelings of tension and redness bear witness to this. In fact, however, the whole body is affected: hands become brittle, elbows and feet cracked, legs flaky, itching and even dryness eczema can occur, and dryness lines appear on the face. How does this happen, and above all, what can be done about it?
Why the skin suffers in winter
There are quite natural explanations for this. These are the three main processes that lead to increased sensitivity of the skin in winter:
- At temperatures below 8 degrees Celsius the sebaceous glands reduce their production. This means that less fat is produced and the lipid film, the natural protective layer of the skin, becomes thinner.
- When it is cold, the blood vessels contract to protect the body from cooling down. However, the weaker blood circulation in the outer layers of the skin means that the skin is less well supplied with oxygen and nutrients and regeneration slows down.
- Finally, there is the heated air, which is extremely dry and literally extracts moisture from the skin.
Change skin care in winter
With a simple trick you can do a lot of good for your facial skin: Change your skin care products for day and night at the latest when the first feeling of tension sets in. So simply use the richer, richer night cream during the day and the moisturiser for the night.
Have you heard of squalane? This is an absolute beauty secret tip for smooth skin in winter. It is a colourless oil that is also found in the skin. Squalane is quickly absorbed, prevents moisture loss and is therefore perfect for cold days.
In winter the skin needs much more oil than in summer. If it is well protected during the day, it can absorb the moisture from your day care at night in peace and quiet. In fact, the water in a moisturiser can freeze on the skin at very low temperatures - which can cause serious damage. However, there is much more you can do to ensure your skin has sufficient nutrients, oil and moisture in winter.
Care products carefully selected
- Pay attention to an increased fat content in your care products. Particularly suitable for winter skin care are vegetable oils, e.g. olive, almond or argan oil, and shea butter. If irritations have already occurred, creams with linoleic acid help to strengthen the natural protective layer of the skin again.
- Products containing hyaluronic acid, collagen, urea and vitamin E in particular act as moisture retainers.
- Pleasant on cold days: facial steam baths or warm compresses open the pores so that care products can penetrate the skin more easily.
- Very important: Avoid products containing alcohol in winter, for example for skin cleansing. They remove grease and moisture from the skin - both of which it needs more in winter.
- Look for moisturising products in your make-up.
- Remember to give special care and protection to the delicate skin of your lips.

Shower and bath - not too hot, not too often
A steaming bath and a tingling hot shower have an enormous feel-good factor when it is stormy and snowing outside. Nevertheless: think of your skin - the warmer the water is, the more moisture it draws from it.
You should also not shower or bathe too often or for very long periods of time, and in any case use moisturising shower gels, nourishing bath oils or moisturising bath additives. Afterwards, apply a good amount of cream to the whole body, not forgetting dry areas such as heels and elbows.
Sun protection - also important in winter
When the cloud cover becomes thinner or even the winter sun shines from the sky, a walk is especially good. Think about sun protection for your face and lips even in winter. Protection factor 15 should be at least. Sunlight is often surprisingly strong in winter and our skin is not used to it. In the mountains you should be particularly careful. In addition, snow reflects and amplifies the radiation. Therefore, your sun protection in winter holidays must be as high as in summer!
What many do not know: In the dark season our body reduces the production of the protective pigment melanin. Its production is stimulated by solar radiation. The skin is therefore much more sensitive in winter than in summer.
How to get through the winter well
If, in addition to good care, you make sure you give your body enough fluids, eat a vitamin-rich diet and strengthen your immune system in general - for example by taking a sauna or steam bath - this will also benefit your skin.
